Salt Lake City
Combining the amenities of a major metropolitan area with the friendliness
of a small, western city, Salt Lake City is fast becoming one of America's
foremost destinations—and for good reason. A beautiful, safe, and
vibrant city, Salt Lake combines unparalleled access to natural recreation,
a bustling economy, dynamic nightlife, remarkable history, warm hospitality,
and Utah's Greatest Snow on Earth.™
Salt Lake is nestled in a valley at the foot of two mountain ranges—the Wasatch to the east and the Oquirrhs to the west. In spring, the canyons are adorned with wildflowers and impromptu waterfalls. During summer, hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking are just minutes away. A blaze of brilliant foliage erupts on canyon walls in autumn. When the snow flies, it graces the slopes at ten world-class ski resorts including Alta, Brighton, Snowbird, and Solitude. Daily sunshine, low humidity, and refreshing mountain breezes combine for a comfortable year-round climate.
Hosting the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 enhanced the community's profile as a world-class travel destination, while showcasing Salt Lake as an unspoiled, family-friendly destination. Whether you visit for a convention, skiing, shopping, or sightseeing, you will find Salt Lake is the right place in any season.
University of Utah :: College of Music
On March 13, 1948 during the intermission of the Utah Symphony's penultimate
performance of its inaugural season under Maurice Abravanel, University
of Utah President A. Ray Olpin announced from the stage: "The University
of Utah invites the Utah Symphony to make its home on our campus and
join with the University in enriching the cultural life of our state." With
this stunning and, to the orchestra and gathered audience, welcome announcement,
the course of music in the community as well as music study at the University
of Utah was set and a collaboration that continues to this day was established.
Situated at the prestigious location on the northwest corner of Presidents Circle, David Gardner Hall is among the finest educational music facilities in the world. Libby Gardner Concert Hall, a 700-seat state-of-the-art venue, has been acclaimed for its superior acoustics and beautiful ambiance. World-renowned performers appear regularly as part of the School's Virtuoso Series and in performances sponsored by the Salt Lake Chamber Music Society. Abravanel Hall
Abravanel Hall is home to the Utah Symphony Orchestra and part of the
Salt Lake County Center for the Arts. Adjacent to Temple Square
and the Salt Palace on South Temple Street this architectural masterpiece
has become a landmark. Besides symphony performances the hall
also hosts numerous concerts and special events.
Abravanel Hall was created specifically to provide an environment of acoustical excellence by Dr. Cyril M. Harris who was the acoustical consultant for the remodeled Avery Fisher Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. Abravanel Hall, formerly known as Symphony Hall, was so named in May of 1993 for the beloved Maestro Maurice Abravanel, conductor of the Utah Symphony and advocate for all the arts in Utah. Abravanel Hall is actually a concrete building within a brick building. Inside these two outer shells stands the beautiful concert hall. Designed strictly as a concert hall the stage has no proscenium - rather, it is an extension of the audience. The form of the hall is rectangular which is characteristic of the world's finest symphony halls (the Grosser Musikvereinssaal in Vienna, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and Symphony Hall in Boston.)
